Figure Drawing 2024

This is a selection of my coursework from my Figure Drawing class this past semester. We met weekly for 3 hours and drew live nude models, studying the proportion and anatomy of the human figure while experimenting with different drawing techniques.

in-class work; this chronological display intends to highlight progress and range of properties I tried to capture in my art over time
Final Project: we were randomly assigned a famous painting and a female artist and tasked to synthesize the composition of the painting with stylistic elements of the female artist’s art practice. I got Liberty Leading the People by Eugène Delacroix paired with Shirin Neshat, so I created a piece that explores the concept of liberation in Eastern and Western contexts using visual elements like guns, protest, martyrdom, etc. My goal was to contribute to the narrative that liberty in the Western world often comes at the expense of the people and resources of the East. I used charcoal and chalk pastel, and my piece was selected to be displayed in a student art showcase next semester. </aside>

Romania Photography. Summer 2024

I went to Romania with my father for 2 weeks. I wanted to feel at home, not like a tourist, because I always felt more connected to being Romanian than to being American. As such, I wanted to capture the experience of a local through photographing the less seen and the mundane. I was left contemplating a nostalgic longing for a life that was almost mine in a place of such unfathomable age.

Bălcești, my father’s childhood town. I observed my father reunite with his old friends and the spaces that held great significance to himself as a child. I found myself looking for memories I’ve never had, as they were memories of another.
Decay: Out of the handful of cities I went to in 2 weeks, the most beautiful thing I encountered was the urban decay. It was typically found away from the center attractions, yet in the open, where many still dwelled—the locals. Being in these old authentically unkept places made me feel like I was not just a visitor, as I connected to the unwritten history of each spot. </aside>
